Scientific Method Posters & Science Experiment Recording Sheets

Teaching the scientific method in elementary classrooms often starts with curiosity. Students notice something interesting, ask questions, and want to figure out why something happens. Clear visuals and structured recording sheets help turn that curiosity into meaningful scientific thinking.

These Scientific Method Posters and Science Experiment Recording Sheets give students a visual reference for the steps of the scientific process while providing structured pages for recording experiments. The posters help reinforce science vocabulary, and the recording sheets guide students as they observe, test ideas, collect data, and draw conclusions.

This resource works well for classroom experiments, science stations, STEM activities, or seasonal investigations.

Included in the Scientific Method and Science Experiment Recording Sheet Resource

There are four main parts to the Scientific Method and Science Experiment Recording Sheets resource:

  • Scientific Method Posters
  • Vocabulary Wall Cards
  • Science Experiment Recording Sheets
  • Science Experiment Flip Book

Each component supports students as they learn to think like scientists and organize their observations during investigations.

Here are some details and photos about each part:

Scientific Method Posters

The scientific method provides a structure for asking questions and investigating the world. While many classrooms follow a similar process, the terminology used for each step can vary slightly between teachers and grade levels.

These Scientific Method Posters give students a visual reminder of each part of the process and help reinforce science vocabulary throughout the year.

The posters include the following steps in the general sequence of a scientific investigation:

  • Observation
  • Question
  • Research
  • Hypothesis
  • Experiment / Procedure
  • Data / Analyze
  • Conclusion

The posters are not numbered, allowing teachers flexibility in how they introduce the steps to students.

In many elementary classrooms, teachers simplify or combine some of the steps. For example, younger students may focus mainly on:

  • Observing
  • Asking questions
  • Making predictions
  • Testing ideas
  • Discussing what happened

Older elementary students can gradually add more formal steps such as research, hypothesis writing, and data analysis.

The posters are available in both color and black-and-white versions. Full-page posters work well for classroom displays, while smaller versions can be printed and placed in student science notebooks or used to create a reference flip book.

Experiment vs. Procedure Posters

Two slightly different posters are included for Experiment and Procedure.

Both terms refer to the testing portion of the investigation, though some teachers prefer to distinguish between:

  • Procedure – the planned steps of the investigation
  • Experiment – the actual testing of the idea

Including both versions allows teachers to choose the wording that best fits their classroom instruction.

Vocabulary Wall Cards

The resource also includes Scientific Method vocabulary wall cards.

These cards use the same language as the posters but without the larger graphics, making them useful for a classroom science word wall.

The cards can be used in several ways:

  • Displaying science vocabulary during a unit
  • Adding reference cards to student notebooks
  • Creating small anchor charts for science stations
  • Reviewing scientific vocabulary during discussions

Like the posters, the cards are available in both color and black-and-white formats.

Science Experiment Recording Sheets

The science experiment recording sheets provide structured pages for students to document their investigations.

These pages are differentiated for a range of grade levels, allowing teachers to gradually introduce more complex elements of the scientific method.

Early recording sheets focus on simple ideas such as:

  • What do you think will happen?
  • What happened during the experiment?
  • What did you notice?

As students become more comfortable with scientific thinking, later recording sheets include sections for:

  • Hypothesis
  • Materials
  • Procedure
  • Data collection
  • Analysis
  • Conclusion

Most pages include lined and unlined versions, giving teachers flexibility for different grade levels. Many sheets also include space for students to draw diagrams or illustrations of their observations.

These pages work well for:

  • Quick classroom experiments
  • STEM challenges
  • Science stations
  • Inquiry activities
  • Seasonal science investigations

Science Experiment Flip Book

The final component of this resource is a Science Experiment Flip Book.

This flip book allows students to record a full investigation while organizing each step of the scientific method on a separate page.

Each page includes:

  • Guiding questions
  • Space for student writing
  • Areas for drawings or diagrams

The Experiment and Procedure pages are included as separate pieces so teachers can layer them together or choose the terminology they prefer.

Flip books are especially helpful for longer investigations because students can clearly see each step of the process as they complete it.
